Online roulette applies the same basic wheel mathematics as casino roulette, but the delivery system changes how bets are accepted, results are generated and disputes are recorded. An RNG table uses software to select the outcome. A live-dealer table streams a physical wheel while server timestamps control the betting window. Both can be legitimate; neither changes the underlying cost of a single-zero or double-zero layout.
The most important choices are the wheel type, rule set, betting limit and speed—not whether the interface looks realistic.
The wheel determines the base house edge
A European wheel has numbers 1–36 plus a single zero, for 37 pockets. An American wheel adds 00, producing 38 pockets. Most bets pay as if there were only 36 outcomes, so the zeros create the house edge.
| Wheel | Pockets | Chance of winning a straight-up number | Standard house edge |
|---|---|---|---|
| Single zero | 37 | 1/37 | 2.70% |
| Double zero | 38 | 1/38 | 5.26% |
| Triple zero | 39 | 1/39 | 7.69% on standard payouts |
A straight-up number normally pays 35-to-1. On a single-zero wheel, expected return on a $1 wager is (1/37 × $35 profit) plus (36/37 × −$1), which equals a loss of about 2.70 cents per dollar.
Changing from inside to outside bets changes volatility and hit frequency but not the standard edge on the same wheel.
RNG roulette records the result before animation ends
In an RNG game, the server accepts the wager, obtains a random value and maps it to a wheel result. The spinning wheel then displays that result. The process can complete in seconds and can support automatic replay or rapid manual betting.
Pressing the screen or predicting the ball animation has no effect. A disconnection after acceptance does not normally void the spin; the server round record determines settlement.
The game information should identify the provider, version, theoretical return and rules. A round ID is essential if the balance does not match the result.
Live roulette uses a physical wheel and digital betting system
A live table streams a dealer or automated physical wheel. Players place digital chips during a timed window. The system closes betting, identifies the winning pocket through sensors or manual confirmation and settles accounts.
Video delay does not define the acceptance deadline. A player can see the dealer still moving while the server has already closed betting. The interface should show a clear closed status and reject late wagers rather than silently carry them forward.
Live games can have slower rounds and social presentation, but they are not more favourable simply because a physical ball is used.
Outside bets trade prize size for hit frequency
Red/black, odd/even and high/low cover 18 numbers. On a single-zero wheel they win 18 of 37 outcomes, not half. Columns and dozens cover 12 numbers and pay 2-to-1.
Inside bets cover fewer numbers and pay more:
- straight-up: one number, 35-to-1;
- split: two numbers, 17-to-1;
- street: three numbers, 11-to-1;
- corner: four numbers, 8-to-1;
- six line: six numbers, 5-to-1.
On a standard single-zero layout, all have the same 2.70% edge. The player is choosing distribution, not a superior expected return.
French rules can reduce even-money cost
La Partage returns half of an even-money wager when zero appears. En Prison holds the wager for a later spin under specified rules. Both can reduce the effective house edge on qualifying even-money bets to about 1.35% on a single-zero wheel.
These rules do not apply automatically to every table called French or European roulette. The help screen must state the procedure and whether it applies to all even-money bets.
A single-zero game without La Partage can still be cheaper than a double-zero game with standard rules.
Table limits determine whether a system can continue
Progression systems increase stake after losses or wins. They do not alter wheel probability. Table maximums and bankroll limits eventually stop the sequence.
Beginning at $5 and doubling after six losses requires wagers of $5, $10, $20, $40, $80 and $160, with $315 already lost before the next $320 attempt. A seventh loss produces $635 total loss.
The frequent small wins of a progression can hide the rare large failure. Online speed makes that failure arrive in fewer minutes.
Neighbour and racetrack bets need exact definitions
European interfaces often include Voisins du Zéro, Tiers du Cylindre, Orphelins and neighbour bets. These are groups based on physical wheel order rather than table layout.
The total stake is divided among several chips and bet types. A button labelled “Voisins” may cost nine units, not one. Payout depends on which component wins.
Before using a racetrack bet, verify total chips, covered numbers and whether the interface repeats the package at the previous total cost.
Side bets can have different mathematics
Some online games add multipliers, jackpots or bonus wheels. A straight-up number can receive an enhanced prize while ordinary payouts are reduced or an additional wager is required.
The base roulette edge cannot be assumed. Read the modified paytable and published RTP. A spectacular 500x maximum can coexist with lower payments on ordinary winners.
Side bets should be analysed independently from the main layout.
Game speed changes expected hourly cost
Expected loss per wager is edge times stake. Expected hourly loss also depends on rounds per hour:
Expected hourly loss = average stake × rounds per hour × house edge.
A player wagering $10 on 200 RNG rounds per hour at 2.70% has $2,000 turnover and about $54 theoretical loss. The same stake over 50 live rounds creates $500 turnover and about $13.50 theoretical loss.
The slower game is not mathematically better per dollar. It exposes fewer dollars per hour.
Limits and currency conversion affect real cost
The table can quote limits in account currency, game currency or a converted display. Rounding may make the effective minimum slightly different.
Check maximum payout as well as maximum stake. A game can accept a large straight-up bet while applying a maximum win per round. Progressive or multiplier prizes may have separate caps.
Cryptocurrency balances can add exchange-rate movement between deposit, play and withdrawal. Roulette result and currency result are separate risks.
Fairness verification depends on the format
RNG games are tested through software, mapping and statistical review. Live tables require equipment controls, video records, outcome recognition and procedures for mis-spins or obstructed results.
A credible operator should provide a game round history. For a dispute, record:
- round ID and timestamp;
- wager positions and total stake;
- winning number;
- balance before and after;
- table name and provider;
- error or disconnection message.
A screenshot of a wheel without the account transaction is incomplete evidence.
A practical online roulette choice
- Choose single zero over double or triple zero.
- Prefer La Partage or En Prison when available and clearly defined.
- Check total cost of neighbour and side bets.
- Set a fixed stake rather than a recovery progression.
- Use a session or turnover limit to control speed.
- Verify the round history and licence of the operator.
No online format removes the zero. The most defensible strategy is to choose the lowest-cost rules, control turnover and treat every staking pattern as a variance choice rather than a prediction method.
