Free spins are a casino promotion that lets a player make a stated number of slot spins without paying the normal stake from the cash balance for each spin. They may be granted after registration, attached to a deposit offer, released as part of a loyalty reward, or issued through another promotion. The important point is that the spins themselves and any winnings produced by them can be governed by separate terms. A headline such as “50 free spins” therefore says very little about the usable value until the eligible game, spin value, expiry time and withdrawal conditions are known.
The spin value is normally fixed by the offer. If each spin is worth C$0.20, for example, the player cannot usually raise that stake to C$1 or move the spins to any slot they choose. Some promotions restrict play to one named game; others permit a short list. Unused spins can expire, and batches released over several days may have a different deadline for each batch. A casino can also state that wins from the spins are credited to a bonus balance rather than directly to withdrawable cash.
That distinction matters when wagering rules apply. The UK Gambling Commission defines a bonus broadly enough to include free spins on specific games and distinguishes bonus funds from a player's own deposit balance. Its consumer guidance also says firms should make clear when customers are playing with their own money and when they are using bonus funds subject to extra restrictions. In Great Britain, rules effective from 19 January 2026 cap wagering requirements attached to incentives at 10 times the incentive amount. Other jurisdictions and offshore sites can use different rules, so the live terms for the particular promotion still control outside that regime.
Free spins built into a slot's ordinary game mechanics are not always the same thing as promotional spins. A slot may trigger a free-spin feature from symbols or another in-game event during normal paid play; that feature is part of the game's rules. Promotional spins, by contrast, are supplied as an incentive through the casino account. Keeping those two ideas separate makes it easier to understand what is being offered, what balance any winnings enter, and which time, stake and wagering restrictions actually apply.
