Federal Reserve notes circulate in United States dollars under code USD and symbol $. Federal Reserve notes are currently issued in $1, $2, $5, $10, $20, $50 and $100 denominations. U.S. paper currency does not expire simply because a newer design appears; Federal Reserve notes remain legal tender unless specifically withdrawn by law.
USD is also widely used as a pricing and settlement currency outside the United States, which can make a “dollar” balance ambiguous when a service does not display the ISO code. USD distinguishes it from Canadian, Australian, New Zealand and other dollar currencies. In an online account, a USD ledger records the balance in U.S. dollars, but a card or bank account funded in another currency can still be converted during payment. The exchange rate, foreign-transaction fee and any processor surcharge are separate from the fact that the receiving account itself uses USD.
