The euro is the common currency of the euro area and uses the code EUR and symbol €. Bulgaria adopted the euro on 1 January 2026, becoming the 21st member of the euro area. Euro banknotes are issued within the Eurosystem and circulate across participating countries in the same denominations, while the national sides of euro coins differ by issuing country.

Current euro banknotes in regular issuance are €5, €10, €20, €50, €100 and €200. The €500 note is no longer issued, but existing genuine notes retain their value and can be exchanged at national central banks of the Eurosystem. For an EUR-denominated online account, balances and transaction limits are expressed in euros. A payment card or bank account held in another currency may still create a foreign-exchange conversion, so the account denomination and the settlement currency of the funding method are separate matters.
