Dai (DAI) is a cryptoasset designed to track the value of the U.S. dollar. It originated in the Maker ecosystem, which was rebranded as Sky in 2024. Sky introduced USDS as an upgraded stablecoin while keeping an upgrade path between DAI and USDS, so DAI continues to exist even though the ecosystem now gives greater prominence to USDS.

DAI is commonly used as an ERC-20 token on Ethereum and can also appear through supported bridges or other network implementations. That makes the network shown by a receiving service important: the token name alone is not enough to identify a valid deposit route. DAI aims for dollar stability, but it is not a bank deposit or physical U.S. dollar. For an online account, the service may retain the balance in DAI or convert the incoming amount to another denomination after the blockchain transfer is received.
