A video poker hand history is useful only when it preserves the information available at the decision point. The final payout alone cannot show whether the hold was correct. A sound decision may lose after the draw, while a poor hold can occasionally produce a premium hand. When the casino does not provide downloadable hand histories, create a compact notation immediately after the hand. A delay invites reconstruction errors. For a dispute about whether cards were held correctly by the interface, retain a screen recording where lawful and permitted, plus the game round identifier and timestamp.
Compare expected values rather than the winning result
For each possible hold, expected value equals the sum of every possible final payout multiplied by its probability, divided by the stake where appropriate. Strategy software performs this enumeration, but the reviewer still needs to verify that its paytable and rules match the game. A result-based review asks, “What did the draw produce?” A decision-based review asks, “Which hold had the highest expected return before the draw?”
Suppose one hold has an expected return of 0.62 credits per credit wagered and another has 0.58. Choosing the second hold creates an expected-value error of 0.04 credits for that hand. At a five-credit stake, the error is 0.20 credits. It may still win on this occasion, but repeated errors of the same type reduce long-run return.

Separate strategy errors from unavoidable variance
A short session can be far below theoretical return even when every decision is correct. Royals and other premium hands contribute materially to published RTP but occur infrequently. Review errors by category instead of by money won. A complete audit should also separate forced decisions from discretionary ones. If a game automatically holds cards or offers a recommendation, record whether the player accepted it and whether the setting can be disabled. An auto-hold suggestion may be correct for the current paytable, but it should not be treated as proof. Verify the recommendation against an independent strategy calculation.
For close hands, retain the exact expected values rather than only the rank order. A log entry such as “four-flush 0.596; high pair 0.582; error 0.014” is more useful than “held wrong cards.” It shows both the correction and its financial significance. Build a review log that improves future play
A useful log needs only a few fields: date, game and paytable, initial five cards, chosen hold, best hold, expected-value gap and error category. Add the final draw for completeness, but do not let it determine the grade. Review a manageable sample rather than trying to reconstruct an entire session from memory.
At the end of each review period, group mistakes by type and calculate total expected-value loss. If 20 errors cost a combined 1.5 credits, the priority is not the hand with the most dramatic cash loss; it is the pattern responsible for the largest repeatable expectation loss. Practice those hands before increasing stake or adding more simultaneous hands.
